The article is a review of contrastive linguistic studies in Bulgaria in the period 1944–1984. It discusses works of a general character as well as those devoted to the various groups of languages that have been subjected to contrastive analysis: Slavic, Germanic, Romance, Balkan, Finnish and Hungarian, Asian and African, and offers some generalizations in conclusion.

As the influx of English words into Bulgarian is particularly intensive at present, many of them have not been registered in dictionaries yet. That is why the overall number of words of English origin in oral and written usage in modern Bulgarian is still largely unknown. The task is further complicated by the uncertain origin of some words. Closely related problems are those of dating and of tracing the ways of penetration of the anglicisms into the language. The pronunciation and transcription of some words also creates certain problems. It is pointed out that in certain cases a differentiated transcription of proper and common nouns is possible and acceptable. Of particular importance is the further clarification of the typology of the phonological, morphological and semantic adaptation of anglicisms in Bulgarian. It is necessary to distinguish the developments which are common to the adaptation of anglicisms in other languages too, and can therefore be regarded as universal, from the developments that are specific only to the adaptation of anglicisms in Bulgarian. Concerning proper public usage, a reasonable and realistic attitude to the increasing number of anglicisms in Bulgarian is recommended %B Съпоставително езикознание / Сопоставительное языкознание / Contrastive linguistics %V 6 %P 190–204 %G eng %0 Journal Article %J Съпоставително езикознание / Сопоставительное языкознание / Contrastive linguistics %D 1978 %T По някои проблеми на контрастивната фонология (английски и български език) %A Данчев, Андрей %X roceeding from the well-known fact that uniform description is a condition sine qua non in 36 contrastive analysis, the author examines some problems in the contrastive phonological study of English and Bulgarian, especially on the segmental phonemic level of vowels. A unified description obviously requires a common phonological transcription, but difficulties arise here due to (1) the existence of differing transcription traditions in Britain and the United States, (2) the lack of uniformity in the use of transcription in the two main English-speaking countries, taken separate{\c t}y, and (3) the absence of a universally accepted phonological transcription for Bulgarian (phonetic transcriptions of Bulgarian are usually based on the Cyrillic alphabet). After a critical survey of the various systems used for the transcription of English in Britain, the United States and some other countries, and giving special consideration to the quantitative (short-long) and qualitative (lax-tense) correlations, the author proposes a system of „all-English“ vowels transcription, suitable for contrast with Bulgarian. %B Съпоставително езикознание / Сопоставительное языкознание / Contrastive linguistics %V 3 %P 21–34 %G eng %0 Journal Article %J Съпоставително езикознание / Сопоставительное языкознание / Contrastive linguistics %D 1978 %T Съпоставително езикознание, теория на превода и чуждоезиково обучение %A Данчев, Андрей %X With a view to setting up an overall classification the author considers the relationships among contrastive linguistics, the theory of translation, foreign language teaching and other related branches of theoretical and applied linguistics. This necessitates the clarification of some currently used terms. Taking into consideration the prevalent usage both in this country and abroad, certain recommendations aimed at achieving terminological unification are offered. Some methodological problems are considered too, especially the role of translation equivalence in contrastive analysis, this leading to the discussion of some debatable points in the theory of translation. The connection of foreign language teaching with contrastive linguistics and the theory of translation are examined against the background of some common features, such as a similar relationship between linguistic and extralinguistic factors, as well as the presence of either natural or artificial bilingualism, with all the implications it carries. %B Съпоставително езикознание / Сопоставительное языкознание / Contrastive linguistics %V 3 %P 30–47 %G eng
