Abstract | The study of phraseological units containing the component ‘devil’ reveals some of the common characteristic features of phraseology in general. The paper discusses phraseological semantic groups across five languages. Most of the groups denote similar wicked or wrong deeds, vices, etc., accounted for by the meaning of the word devil ‘the supreme spirit of evil’. The thematic groups denoting ‘the intensive manifestation of any feature’, which are common in phraseology in general, as well as some phraseological exclamations are characterized in this particular case by their negative value. They may either vary or be similar and even identical in imagery and structure. Some similar or identical features are also observed in the explicit expression of emotion. Some of the languages under investigation manifest various ways in which national psychology is reflected in the phraseology. |
